You may not have the holiday feeling You may not be filled with good will You have an illness with which you’re dealing You may be defaulting on your bills You may be frustrated with the politics and religion of the season You may be angry at your family and have a perfectly good reason You may be poor and sad and lonely You may not want to make a sound You may be very pissed off at Elon Musk running Twitter into the ground You may think that hope is a problematic thing to keep handing out for free You may have an on going beef with your neighbour on which you never will agree You might be a vegan, you might be a Mormon you might despair at all this waste You might just not like this season it might not be to your taste You might be missing Halloween you might look forward to New Year You might have things that worry you and a list of things to fear You might think the world is ghastly with its wars, disease and climate change You may be all in favour of alien invasion and find society pretty strange You may abhor reality TV, talk shows and all the popular crap that is oddly universal You may want to strangle whoever it is who makes insurance company commercials You may think modern music is rubbish and wish your children liked the music you do You may just really dislike your children and honestly who can blame you And you may want to run away but have nowhere left to go You may just hate the cold weather and despair about the snow You might wrap yourself in flags and march to take away other people’s rights You might be overwhelmed by all the outrage and the endless stupid fights You might dislike all the billionaires as much as they dislike paying tax And the fact they’ve built their businesses on everyone else’s backs You might hate the compromise you make living in a world you don’t understand Where just to clothe yourself and eat a little means blood is on your hands You might hate the child labour That built the phone you’re listening to this on You might just really hate my face and hate everything about this song But at least we try once a year to put our differences aside And share a little of the love we’ve been saving quietly inside And I know you might be sick at this point of all these fucking rhymes And I know other traditions and religions celebrate at other times And I know there is a very heteronormative CIS white male middle class Christian westernised sentiment behind the words I sing But I heard recognising my privilege might still be a thing And so please I ask during this Christmas or holiday period you find just something that gives you thankful or happy feels And let me know what it is on social Because if it isn’t on social media these days is it even real?

Winter 05:19
The sky a grey watercolour The ground hardens fast None of the leaves on the trees will last The breeze from the north bites at the tips of your fingers Deep into your bones where it invariably lingers But there’s fire and love Sweaters and scarves And all of the warmth That these things preserve There’s holidays and decorations To fill us with cheer And songs and stories that we roll out each year There’s families gathering and you connect with old friends we know the new year will start when this one eventually ends Light the fire show the love Use up your reserves And share all of this warmth We so richly deserve And if you think you can’t find the spirit inside of you Know that we’re here to help and we hope that you try It may seem corny and cool to reject it But the more you give in the more it helps you get by And your soul can fly There’s food and there’s feasting Surrounded by laughter and singing Lights hang on the houses and new traditions beginning There’s hot chocolate hugs And mistletoe kisses Photo albums filled with sweet past reminisces Reach out to the ones who have less and are on their last nerve Give what you can Be all the promise you serve

It’s now all I know You and the weather My heart will outgrow My chest altogether Because this is the time And this the place And all this success Shines through your face Take to the hills I know you’re there waiting With perpetual thrills And endless creating Because no one can tell us When to emerge And all of the stars Start to converge When winter settles in I would get cold down to my bones Without you And with the lights down low And the reassuring glow Of this space I’m free You and me And our dog that’s three Let the winter settle in Here’s where we want to be

The Garden 03:56
Watch the garden For the signs Map the year out Inside the lines Let plans settle Let dust blow It’s a value that applies Everywhere that you might go It’s the turn Of the leaves It’s the hardening Of the breeze It’s the bite of the wood It’s something that at first glance Won’t do us any good If you eventually emerge scuffed up but alive and at a place that you can better understand Nothing out there in the infinite that can’t be fixed by asking for one more helping hand And a track where we can land When the grass Is left alone When we’re happy That it’s grown When the breaks Give back the grain When the answers are Really all the same

about

I had four songs written with a wintery theme - including my Christmas single "A Christmas Card from a Bearded, Nasal Layabout in Connecticut" - so that seemed to make sense as a nice little single/EP release.

and why not? who doesn't love some music during the holidays?

So that's it. 2022. done.

Hope you had a good one, hope you enjoyed our musical offerings this year

Thanks again for all your love and support,
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all the best

Jon

Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures New Milford, Connecticut

Songwriting and banging your instruments together

The main thing I love to do is write songs. I pick up various instruments from ukulele to piano, accordion to percussion and electric guitar to harmonica and bang them about to try and get close to the noises I hear in my head but the writing comes first. ... more
