Daryl got the motor A beat up 78 Drove it up and down main street Proud of his personalised License plate He’d had a journey In the back of his head Since he was old enough to know he wasn’t staying And any leads he had were dead Set your sites on the horizon Somewhere you’ve never seen Curiosity in corners And everywhere in between Don’t want to be a tourist Try to blend in But they know you’re not from round here And you are uncomfortable in your own skin What if he stayed here That small house is up for sale He could change his name and his appearance What he had now was growing stale What if he ran for office Change in our time Could he commit to the next few years Or he could commit a crime And set his sites on the horizon Next stop somewhere he’s never seen Got curiosity in corners And everywhere in between He’s no longer a tourist But he’s never at home Just another piece of road debris All part of the wandering syndrome

Without Them 04:14
Take the afternoon Try and get your rest Don’t think about the difference Between the needles and the nest We’ve looked around the neighbourhood You seem to handle this the best Hiding in the folds of curtains Wait to feel the seasons change Take stock of what you put away Stick to a plan of action detailing When to work and when to play You’ve been counting coins And checking mirrors for decay Tiptoeing through a garden full of serpents It’s a capital idea To remove all that you fear and let the others not come near Despite getting nothing done Without them Abandoning the pier And all that you hold dear In hopes it becomes clear How to get along just fine Without them Poke around the backwoods Meeting those who are pressing on Simple in the understanding That hard work won’t lead them wrong And all the changing seasons Amount to nothing more than one more song And just another unwelcome disturbance

Dead World 02:58
Some things thrive in the dead world Some things pick up what others discard Some things beg, borrow and steal With no thought and no regard for the others for the others that fight Just to see the night I know where I fit in the dead world You’ve made that pretty clear You won’t get much of a fight from me I feel it leaving with each passing year As for the others I hope they feel alright When they see the night Nobody runs from themselves in the dead world It’s been too late now for far too long You can get used to the silence To where they say you must belong Some things emerge in the dead world Some things that were not there before Some version maybe but this is a step back They want to rise up and give them what for As for the others Out of mind, out of sight They hold on to the night

Put pen to paper Make each other laugh Put a few aspirations Into the paragraph Close out the story With some words You’ve been carrying around In hopes of a second draft And when they stop you and ask Did you inspire this You can say yes and blow them a kiss Put your hands in the soil Make new things grow Give a few moments to Things that you don’t know Try to match the colours Try to please the birds And carry some seeds Wherever you go And when they stop you and ask Where do you find the time You can say sorry, gotta go, I’m already behind It’s funny what we’re afraid of And what beauty drags us in It’s neither one or the other But a unique collection of things Put yourself in the kitchen Cook up a storm You live somewhere between precision And an abstract form Whatever reveals itself Cut it into thirds Just assume they know by now That they have been warned And when they stop you and ask Why even try You can say because if you didn’t you’d die

about

I am staying at a cabin in the western Catskills for a week and there is a guitar here.

I decided to write and record some very low-fi, unproduced tracks because Bandcamp Friday was coming up.

Then I got sick with a stomach bug.

But in 2 days, just using my iPhone, I did manage to write and record 4 tracks.

That's what this EP is all about.

Hope you enjoy!

Songwriting and banging your instruments together

The main thing I love to do is write songs. I pick up various instruments from ukulele to piano, accordion to percussion and electric guitar to harmonica and bang them about to try and get close to the noises I hear in my head but the writing comes first. ... more
