The Ballad of Rusty Crates

Grab hold of the morning Stop it kicking free One more pass at the drawing of the cards There are two many moments all at once wrapped up inside me Hold out for better futures Or build your own across your back No hope in more and more computers Or while your thoughts refuse to crack I’ve been around enough to know it’s mostly all made up And that no big ideas get to play And you’ll spend most of the time planning for the inevitable Knowing you’ll just wing it on the day Rest up they say you’ve earned it But they won’t let you rest at all It seemingly doesn’t make the smallest bit of difference Whose eye or even no eyes are ever on the ball Plenty of answers No one wants to do the work It’s mostly just the chancers Who hold on to all the perks

Nail it Down 05:36
Climb in and get comfortable there’s a lot of road ahead Nothing is affordable Even if you’re considered that well read Wash the wind away We’ve emptied all your bank accounts Just when you get a handle on it It moves by large amounts When I’m by myself I can ratify the answers When I’m in the crowd I hide behind the dancers You’ve not just changed the course The boat has got a leak That’s usual of course If you won’t let us speak Nail it down Why won’t you Nail it down Take a look around They want you all to nail it down

Just once In a blue moon You’re ensconced In a warm cocoon But not enough enough Not enough in this life Find the crumbs Where they fall Hold your defiant thumbs Against the encroaching wall And that’s enough enough Enough in this life And they know Exactly what is what And you know you know They made it up on the spot And every balast you laid down Will one day rot And go back And go back to the ground Just once You’d like to make it out unscathed You’d settle for a world Well Behaved That would be enough Enough in this life And you know Exactly what is what Crossed purposes To bring us back to the same spot And all the greedy monsters Never will get caught You’ve been around Go back to the ground The playing field Never even in this life You return healed Like evolving wildlife And you hunt and you run And you’re never quite done Always somebody’s son Answering to everyone Often Under the gun With your one heart holding on You’re Just about enough in this life Yes You’re just about enough in this life

I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I feel the urgency with every stop sign I drive through I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I’m acting like signalling is just a suggestion A suggestion I didn’t pay much mind I’ve been grabbing what I need at the grocery Running out the manager chasing me And pocketing every bit of strangers change that I happen to find Riding through every red light in the middle of mostly dead nights Taking backroads wherever possible and leaving trucks and other cars way behind We’ve been speeding through the great state of Illinois A sense of determination and destination with not much joy And I know you’d do the same if the foot was in the other shoe I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you Doing everything possible one man in a beat up ford could do I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you We haven’t paid a motel check from Sioux City to Fort Wayne Every cop in the state of Ohio will soon surely know my name I feel bad but we’ve stiffed every single server in every single road side diner If I strike it rich, their families will never want for anything again We’ve sped, shouted and barged our best through most of the great but flat midwest Dodging or out running state troopers a 45 in the glove box as a last resort We stole the collection plates from churches Nothing but a steely eyed sense of purpose And I don’t know if we’ll make it all the way, I haven’t got a clue But I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you But how did your baby get so far away was it all the things you didn’t do and all the things you refused to say If she was mine I wouldn’t ever let her go And when she’s yours again you better behave as if you know We moved earth and all the other planets Turned ourselves into wanted bandits Blew fuses and blew gaskets Almost ended up in matching caskets I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you I don’t know if you deserve it but we persevered and saw it through I’ve been breaking the law to get your baby back to you

Make a change Make a change Walk away from the firing range Put your life back In your hands Everyone around you Understands What’s been started Cannot end What’s been broken No longer bends Make a change Make a change Walk away from the firing range Words mean nothing Actions less What happens next Is Anyones guess We’ve been ok We’ve been the best We’ve never been heard Or been at rest Make a change Make a change Walk away from the firing range It’s no good I don’t know why we should Do the things that others would You wouldn’t either If this where you stood Half way between the grave and childhood

I will see you some day in the future I promise, I will see you again And when I see you let’s hope we’re both in good humour It never ends until it ends I will meet you, meet you in the parking lot of Nick’s Country Kitchen I promise I will be there, so call around some friends If it goes ok we can make it an annual tradition It never ends until it ends We drifted apart, we went our own way I thought of calling you sometimes but I didn’t know what to say But to put an end to our estrangement let’s make some kind of arrangement Let’s not let it go another day I’ve had my troubles just like most of us do I’ve been living down where the road bends I’ve been running and biting off more I could chew It never ends until it ends My past is littered with a lot of good intentions And I know what kind of message that sends Grab hold of some hope and do away with needless conventions It never ends until it ends Yeah it never ends until it ends Yeah it never ends my dear, until it ends!

It was the moment You knew they were leaving Taking all that you’d worked for off in a van No one would deny we were all done believing But why destroy what we did it’s just because you can I suppose You hold your breath as you take that first step Out into the cold where you hope serenity lies Open your self and try to find comfort Living the life in an endless disguise and old clothes Sometimes I think of your hands Long faded skin holding on till the end All that you’d seen behind kind but blurred lines The wisdom we mourn with each passing trend It’s written down somewhere but here again you go writing The pencil can’t keep up with your angry old tears You wish there was distance between you and the fighting And maybe there will be in the passing of years As doors softly close Sometimes I think of all your ideas And wish that you’d shared many more when you could There were stories and sonnets now it all disappears the words that we cherished and often misunderstood

about

This new album "The Ballad of Rusty Crates" is sort of my Mule Variations - in the sense that it features just about every weird and wonderful genre of music that I have dabbled with - from growling blues to synthwave, from country infused singer-songwriter ditties to indie electric rock stylings!!

It's 10 more silly songs that the most dedicated of you can add to your collection, and I do hope you will!

Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures New Milford, Connecticut

Songwriting and banging your instruments together

The main thing I love to do is write songs. I pick up various instruments from ukulele to piano, accordion to percussion and electric guitar to harmonica and bang them about to try and get close to the noises I hear in my head but the writing comes first. ... more
