A Christmas Card from a Bearded, Nasal Layabout in Connecticut

from Winter by Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures

lyrics

You may not have the holiday feeling
You may not be filled with good will
You have an illness with which you’re dealing
You may be defaulting on your bills
You may be frustrated with the politics and religion of the season
You may be angry at your family and have a perfectly good reason

You may be poor and sad and lonely
You may not want to make a sound
You may be very pissed off at Elon Musk running Twitter into the ground
You may think that hope is a problematic thing to keep handing out for free
You may have an on going beef with your neighbour on which you never will agree

You might be a vegan, you might be a Mormon you might despair at all this waste
You might just not like this season it might not be to your taste
You might be missing Halloween you might look forward to New Year
You might have things that worry you and a list of things to fear

You might think the world is ghastly with its wars, disease and climate change
You may be all in favour of alien invasion and find society pretty strange
You may abhor reality TV, talk shows and all the popular crap that is oddly universal
You may want to strangle whoever it is who makes insurance company commercials

You may think modern music is rubbish and wish your children liked the music you do
You may just really dislike your children and honestly who can blame you
And you may want to run away but have nowhere left to go
You may just hate the cold weather and despair about the snow

You might wrap yourself in flags and march to take away other people’s rights
You might be overwhelmed by all the outrage and the endless stupid fights
You might dislike all the billionaires as much as they dislike paying tax
And the fact they’ve built their businesses on everyone else’s backs

You might hate the compromise you make living in a world you don’t understand
Where just to clothe yourself and eat a little means blood is on your hands
You might hate the child labour
That built the phone you’re listening to this on
You might just really hate my face and hate everything about this song

But at least we try once a year to put our differences aside
And share a little of the love we’ve been saving quietly inside
And I know you might be sick at this point of all these fucking rhymes
And I know other traditions and religions celebrate at other times
And I know there is a very heteronormative CIS white male middle class Christian westernised sentiment behind the words I sing
But I heard recognising my privilege might still be a thing
And so please I ask during this Christmas or holiday period you find just something that gives you thankful or happy feels
And let me know what it is on social
Because if it isn’t on social media these days is it even real?

Songwriting and banging your instruments together

The main thing I love to do is write songs. I pick up various instruments from ukulele to piano, accordion to percussion and electric guitar to harmonica and bang them about to try and get close to the noises I hear in my head but the writing comes first. ... more
